How Many Summers Do You Have Left?
This could be someone's last summer...
I originally wrote this in the summer of 2024 as an email. I think about this often, when will this be the last time, and I wanted to post it here to live on. Share your thoughts in the comments…
You only get 18 summers with your kids
Summer is here.
Vacations are on the horizon or not scheduled at all.
Work, life, money, obligations, and more can get in the way of living life.
How many more summers do you have left in your life?
How about your family’s life, your kids’ life? In your parents, grandparents, cousins, aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends, and on and on.
If you're LUCKY, you get 70 summers. Just 18 with your kids. Maybe 15 with your friends. And after high school and college, maybe 10 or 15 more with the people you love.
I read something one time: you never know in the moment that this will be your last. You never know the last time your kid(s) want to go to the park. The last time you hung out with a friend, or the last time you’ll ever see your parents. You only look back and realize you never did it again.
18 Summers
You get 18 years with your kids. This is the first summer my son doesn’t really want to do anything with me; he wants to do things with his friends. So last summer was the last summer.
I never knew it was the last time.
I knew there was a chance.
And I made sure it counted.
Are you wasting these times?
Are you thinking there’s always another time, the next holiday, or event?
We’ll do something next time, next summer.
Are you thinking we’ll catch up next time?
I’m busy.
I got work.
I don’t have money.
One day, it’ll end without warning.
There will be no more summers. There’ll be no summers with your children. There’ll be no more summers with your friends. There will be no more summers for you.
Let’s not let life pass us by and enjoy this summer!!!
This very well could be someone’s last. It doesn’t have to be extravagant. It doesn’t have to be expensive. It doesn’t have to be anything but a moment shared with the people you love.
You’ll never know when the last time will be. Things happen, and we don’t always get a warning. Kids grow up and have new interests, friendships, and things they want to do without you. Friends move on, start families, and take on other obligations.
Tragedy can strike at any time without warning.
Call or text one person today and make a plan with a real date on it.
Say I LOVE YOU.
Tell people I cherish your friendship, our relationship.
Have fun. Enjoy your summer. Enjoy it with friends. Enjoy the family. Take your kids somewhere. Don’t let this summer pass you by.
Each season is a fleeting opportunity to create lasting memories with loved ones. Embrace the present, cherish those around you, and make this summer count, because we never know how many more summers we have left.
